Toddla T's Summer Skank

We catch up with the Sheffield grimestar about playing Rockness, musical vans and his of-the-moment top five tracks.

Toddla T is currently bed bound in Ibiza, having just played at Eden Ibiza and spun the wheels of steel on the Rizla Invisible Players Tour at Rockness Festival (click here to hear his set from Rockness) – a tour that has seen the likes of Gruff Rhys, Micachu and David Shrigley take to the decks at festivals all over the UK. Despite his sorry (and we suspect self-inflicted) state, the 23-year-old Sheffield bad boy still manages to fire up his laptop and shoot over a quick fire Q&A to Dazed Digital. Perhaps that fact he does so is a fitting testament to his individual drive. After all, Toddla is now one of the hosts of Radio 1’s In New DJs We Trust and is currently basking in the glory of his groundbreaking debut album Skanky Skanky (not to mention his excellent work with Roots Manuva). In fact, it’s safe to say that Toddla T’s trademark bass‘n’wiggles skank is pretty much taking over the summer.

Dazed Digital: How was Rockness?
Toddla T: Wicked! It’s on such a great site over looking the lake.

DD: What was it like playing in the Rizla Invisible Players’s 1920s musical van?
Toddla T: It was a right laugh. Loads of nutters kept climbing up the front and popping their heads in.

DD: We heard Serocee loved playing the crowd too?
Toddla T: Standard. We always have fun, even if the gig’s dry. Which this one certainly wasn’t...

DD: Was there a Rockness tune?
Toddla T: The Scots are stereotyped for their madness and it was kind of proven. Blokes dressed as Borat and Spiderman... It was madness! The crowd was bang up for it. The biggest tune for us was the Caspa remix of Deadmau5’s “I Remember”.

DD: How were your fellow DJs Jon Carter and Andrew Weatherall?
Toddla T: Both wicked. Jon Carter played wicked bumpin’ style house and techno, then broke down to reggae and came back up. Andrew played real high quality techno. Riton was amazing! It was a sick line up.

DD: What’s Ibiza been doing to you?
Toddla T: It was a right laugh until I got a bug and was bed bound for three days!

DD: What’s your Toddla Top five?
Toddla T:
1. Skream “Fields of Emotion”
2. La Roux “Bulletproof” (DJ Zinc remix)
3. Maxsta “Night in East”
4.    MJ Cole Feat. Serocee “AO”
5. Bob Sinclair “Love You No More” (Count N Sinden remix)

DD: What are your top five highlights of 2009 so far?
Toddla T:
1. Releasing Skanky Skanky.
2. The Miami Winter Music Conference (check out the Toddla TV episode featuring Diplo, Fake Blood, A-Trak, Benga, Annie Mac, Skream, Clipz and Drop The Lime).

3. Producing Tinchy Stryder.
4. Producing Bashy.
5. Doing my first Radio 1 show.

DD: Give us your one line review of the album?
Toddla T: Steel City Sonix.

DD: Is it still grime up north?
Toddla T: Always.
