Ava DuVernay convinced Sade to record her first song in eight years

‘I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind + giving. A goddess’

Sade’s last studio album was 2010’s Soldier of Love. The singer and her band have been quiet since then, but last night (Feb 20) news came that they’d be breaking their eight-year silence with a new song, “Flower Of The Universe”, for Ava DuVernay’s new film A Wrinkle In Time.

“I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway,” DuVernay tweeted. “She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, the track has also been remixed by Chicago rap producer No I.D. The rest of the soundtrack features original songs from DJ Khaled and Demi Lovato, Sia, Chloe x Halle, and Kehlani, while the score will come from Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi.

DuVernay seems to be a great fixer upper: last year it was reported that she’d optioned the rights for a Rihanna/Lupita Nyong’o buddy movie based on a viral tweet.

A Wrinkle In Time, adapted from Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel, stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and more. It hits theatres on March 9 – watch its trailer below.
