The North London producer puts together a mix featuring melodic club bangers, tearjerking anthems and a special remix of Zayn’s ‘Pillowtalk’
North London producer Dark0 started out making melodic club music drawing as much influence from genres like grime and R&B as it did vintage J-RPG video game soundtracks. But after releases on record labels like Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper and Visionist’s Lost Codes, the 25-year-old artist’s sound started to take on a more emotional and cinematic quality. His latest EP, Oceana (released via XL Recordings), pushes the raw emotion even further with lovesick, tears-on-the-dancefloor anthems like “Forever” and trance-inspired bursts of euphoria like “Luka”.
Coinciding with the EP, Dark0 has put together our latest Dazed Mix, featuring tracks from the producer and likeminded artists like Kamixlo, Sky H1 and Lorenzo Senni. It also features a remix of Zayn’s “Pillowtalk”, naturally. Listen below, and read on for a quick catch-up with Dark0 and a tracklist.
A lot of people have been saying 2016 was a shitshow of a year, but how’s it been for you?
Dark0: Yeah, it’s been fucked, looking forward to it being over. 2017 probably won’t be much different at this rate though. Like, things won’t change no matter how long online woke-measuring contests go on for. Tangible change happens in the real world – going outside and doing something, anything positive. Hopefully 2017 sees more practicing morality in the real world and less preaching it URL. But yeah, aside from all that it’s been a very hectic year for me. Haven’t really had a chance to take any time out or nurture my closest/newest friends’ relationships as much as I’d have liked to. It hasn’t been easy for a lot of us here (in London) and it’s sometimes hard to find time for each other. We all probably need each other more than we want to admit to.
“A lot of my output has been informed directly by my feelings and thoughts recently and me trying to become more engaged with that type of shit” – Dark0
Tell us about the Oceana EP.
Dark0: Oceana is about feeling disconnected to an environment that I’ve always felt familiar with, and what that feels like sonically. Like being in love with your city, knowing it inside and out, all its secrets, being loyal to it. Like, I’m screaming ‘I promise I’ll be true’ on ‘Luka’. It’s a beautiful and affirming feeling, having that very sure sense of belonging somewhere, something I (and probably a lot of us) take for granted. Then, the second half of the record is me expelling the feeling of attachment from my system and moving forward. Understanding that it’s just a place that doesn’t actually care for me the same way, like a one-sided relationship you’re sort of just going along with. I was thinking, how can I try and illustrate like, an early-adult love story that takes place in a really stimulating and serrated environment that eventually self-destructs because it’s unsustainable... IN ONE WORD? ‘Oceana.’ It was always gonna be Oceana. (RIP every fallen Oceana, you were all amazing and unique.)
What are you drawing inspiration from lately?
Dark0: I’ve become so fucking introverted, to be honest – a lot of my output has been informed directly by my feelings and thoughts recently and me trying to become more engaged with that type of shit. It’s actually so exhausting but I’m really enjoying what I’m making this way. Interviews like this used to make me feel like I was at the therapists, now I feel like I’m confronting myself a lot more through making music, its mad. And it’s really helped. I’m less angry, get into fewer fights, and get less bothered by petty shit. Another thing I’ve been drawing inspiration from lately is Serbian Gypsy/Turbo Folk.
“The launch party was amazing... I had a PS4 on a projector and everyone on the dancefloor was passing around controllers, beating each other up on Mortal Kombat X while moshing to my friends’ and my music” – Dark0
What have you got coming up in future?
Dark0: I wanna get the Oceana tour sorted for early next year inshallah, and start designing some merch for my sexy fans/gang to rock. I wanna do another clubnight. The launch party was amazing (thanks to all who came through!), I had a PS4 on a projector and everyone on the dancefloor was passing around controllers, beating each other up on Mortal Kombat X while moshing to my friends’ and my music as we performed. It was a very holy evening. Finally of course, new music and projects will come.
What’s going on in this mix?
Dark0: Hybrids to increase your vigilance, anthems for backing shots of Belvedere Vodka (my new official sponsor for next season) and remixes not good enough to make the cut: this is the end-of-year Sonic Equinox PowerGlo Mix.
What’s your new year’s resolution?
Dark0: To spend more time around my friends and family and to love them more than ever.
