Kanye gets grimey, Kelela riffs on heartbreak with Arca, and a new Diplo/Skrillex collab has us asking – are we becoming Beliebers?
Whether it was Big Sean staring into a dark sky, inc. crying teardrops “from below”, or Drake running through the 6 with his woes, it’s been a dark month for new music. Heems was purging his soul on his jaw-dropping debut album Eat Pray Thug, Kelela was singing about being someone’s ex-girlfriend over slinky Arca beats, and My Panda Shall Fly was recruiting singer-songwriter Deptford Goth to bring a lump-in-throat kicker to his bleeps and bloops. Then again, maybe it’s more accurate to say it had been a dark month for music, until Kanye West showed up at the BRITs with an unrealistically large flamethrower and half of London’s grime scene, launching his new single “All Day” and Skepta’s massive “Shutdown” into outer space. Plus, Ty Dolla $ign released an undeniable jam with power team Charli XCX and Tinashe, and Skrillex and Diplo have been making eyebrow-raisingly good pop with (whisper it) Justin Bieber. Maybe it’s not all doom and gloom.
