After releasing his debut EP on the legendary Kerri Chandler's MadTech Records, South London's Laurence Blake working under the moniker Citizen is now set to arrive on new London label Love Fever as their second signing with his latest offering 'Room Service' - a fine example of his understated house sounds. Here he makes us an exclusive mix ahead of his headline set this Friday at house night, Fill Yer Boots in Hoxton.
...your secret talent?
Basketball. A few summers ago I was living just off of Brick lane in front of the basketball court there and we had this insane terrace looking out over it and held a massive 'White Men Can't Jump' Party complete with day-glo tanktops, LA gear, knee pads, strictly 90s house and hip hop and BBQ chicken. Needless to say it was live.
...the story behind your name?
One of my favourite films of all time is Akira and one of the characters has this insane looking bike with loads of stickers and decals placed about. One of them says Citizen and I thought that'd do until I found something better.
...your worst vice?
Ah man it'd have to be a long standing obsession with Eastenders. The grittiness, the terrible acting and its cast of losers and mavericks. Brilliant.
... your favourite sound?
New Jack Swing at 5am in a sweaty basement.
...your favourite website?
Big ghost Chronicles. Hands down. The funniest blog out there. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about it's some dude who has taken on the persona of Ghostface killah from Wu Tang clan with a hard on for Drake, well cash money in general and all things wrong and wrong in hip hop. Pinch of salt people.
...your favourite record label?
I don't actually have a favourite one overall, I like a lot of labels for a bunch of different reasons.
Permanent Vacation holds a soft spot for me as well as DFA, Island are killing it right now. It's a toughie I like way to many to make a sensible decision.
...your worst fashion secret?
I have this amazing 2Pac and Aaliyah t-shirt (yes both of them on the same t-shirt) that I got from Elephant and Castle market that is getting busted out aw12.
...are you listening to now?
This producer from the States called Kozee just sent me this insane Erykah Badu deep house orgasm she just made. It's been on repeat. Apart from that AlunaGeorge, Kashii and the homies Bicep.
How would you describe your work?
Melancholic. My interpretation of house music filtered through my many influences largely from the UK garage and bass scenes.
A tonne of vocal Collaborations are in the works which I'm really excited about, upcoming release on Love Fever records (lf002) in July, more collaborations and music videos involving milk, dancers and unsettling behaviour.
