Music / RiseThe Echo VamperThe girl/boyfriend duo take a DIY ethic to their rock'n'roll look with masses of huge hair and steady drum machinesShareLink copied ✔️January 20, 2012MusicRiseText Victor Moreno The Echo Vamper Real-life couple, Iza Mortag Freund and James Brook of The Echo Vamper met somewhere between Aarhus in Denmark and Bristol, their cities of origin respectively. Exuding a DIY rock'n’roll and Cabaret Voltaire feel, Freund’s melodic vocals focus on a classic rock style, whilst Brook’s reverberated guitar riffs work well with the steady drum-machine beats and vibrant synths in the new EP with lead single 'Lover'. Setting aside their day jobs and studies, they've produced their album themselves and have since been touring Europe. Here we speak to the duo about their secret past of 70s clothing and their hatred of auto-tune... WHAT'S... ...your secret talent? James: I can pick up and play any instrument I choose to!Iza: I am also an educated actress/performance artist... ...your worst vice? James: The ability to spend vast amounts of time on nothing...Iza: I am a hoarder and collector of the worst sort. …the story behind your name? The name was taken from an old German harmonica... We felt it had a timeless sort of 'weight' to it... ... your favourite sound? James: Hmm... wood pigeons or distant church bells.Iza: The sounds people make when they dance freely. ...your worst fashion secret? James: Well, I did go through sort of an early 70s rock thing... a lot of cord flares and flowery shirts.. I shudder to think about it now.Iza: Even as a child I would only deal in extremes when it came to clothing... so I wore some outrageous outfits in the 90s. I'm quite proud of the enginuity and boldness....but some of it was hysterically hideous. ...your favourite website? Don't have one... ...your favourite label? We like to mix and match... We mainly go for secondhand things... ...at the top of your hit/shit list? James: When people talk about 'Time Machines' they always speak of going back and nailing Hitler, or something... I'd prefer to find the person who invented 'Auto-tune' and call in that sizable debt to society with extreme prejudice.Iza: People who only talk to hear themselves speak. ...are you listening to now? At the moment... Mainly early Rolling Stones, Dylan, Roxy Music and The Velvet Underground How would you describe your work? It depends on what you mean by 'work'... What are you most excited about next?Travelling around the world next summer playing concerts in new places to new people, recording songs along the way... losing ourselves in life and the world the way only travelling musicians can.
