A Complete History of My Sexual Failures
is not only a hilarious and touching portrait of a man whose psyche is
arrested in an early stage of adolescence, but it is also an
unnervingly accurate indication of the psycho-sexual identity crises of
the average 21st century male. There are a lot of fairly unattractive
aspects to the 30-something "independent filmmaker" Chris Waitt that
women out there will instantly recognise – nonchalance,
self-absorption, unreliability and, of course, an enduring penchant for
comic books and action figures.
However, it could be said that
by taking the (brave or foolhardy?) decision to turn the camera on
himself and document a litany of failed relationships, Waitt has done
something that could even be described as heroic. His film opens an
uneasy window into the slacker soul, with honesty so endearingly brutal
that he shows all of us pot-smoking idlers up to be psychological car
crashes just waiting to happen.
Sure, on one level Waitt is
simply the ultimate post-grunge layabout, sauntering around with a boom
mic and a laissez faire attitude that would make a diazepam addict look
lively, but there is a more serious side to this documentary that
becomes ever clearer as his myriad problems and inadequacies come to
the fore. The moments of true comedy genius (cue the ex who threatens
to take him to court and refuses to talk to him unless it's from behind
a curtain, her typed answers related Stephen Hawking-style) are
balanced with some of genuine sadness, and some that will make most men
recoil in horror. Having one's testicles beaten in a dominatrix's
dungeon, in pursuit of a long absent erection, for instance, could be
classed as borderline insanity.
A Complete History of My Sexual Failures is out on June 27th. Watch the trailer below.
