The LAPD has 28 open Hollywood and media sex crime cases

The chief of police said they anticipate ‘even more high-profile sex crime reports in the coming weeks and months’

As more and more people have come forward about their abusers and harassers, the LAPD has confirmed that there are currently 28 open sex crime cases involving Hollywood and media figures under active investigation.

As Deadline reports, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said that five teams of two special assignment detectives are investigating allegations including Harvey Weinstein, Ed Westwick, Girls writer Murray Miller, and many others. He said that he anticipates “the LAPD and other jurisdictions will receive even more high profile sex crime reports in the coming weeks and months. We encourage all victims of sexual assault to come forward to report these crimes.”

As well as the 28 open investigations, apparently 37 other reports have been sent to other jurisdictions. Acknowledging the gravity of the current situation, Beck added, “we recognise the significant trauma these victims suffer at the hands of the predators who commit these heinous crimes. Our detectives are coordinating closely with our local prosecutors and other police agencies, including the NYPD. The high-profile nature of these particular cases has not changed our unyielding commitment to seek justice for ALL victims of sexual assault.”

Following an extensive New York Times report that covered allegations against Weinstein dating back decades, multiple men and women have come forward with allegations against men in the film and other creative industries.

The Los Angeles Times reports that officials in the police force confirmed they had never received so many high-profile sexual assault allegations before. The main kinds of crime being alleged are sexual assault and lewd acts like groping and masturbation. The time period where a crime can still be prosecuted varies – for lewd acts in a state like California it can be one year, whereas in most rape cases it’s 10 years. Many, officials said, are complex, older cases that include more than one victim – in these cases, cold-case unit officers have been brought in to deal with accusations that have little physical evidence. Whatever the time limitations, the LAPD force has been instructed to conduct major investigations.

The Beverly Hills Police Department is also currently investigating 12 sexual assault allegations against entertainment industry people. Corey Feldman recently reported that he was sexually abused as a child actor, but was told by authorities the statute of limitations had expired.
