Turkey might not be known for its creative fashion industry, at least not just yet. Rising star Umit Benan was not only born in Turkey but also based his SS ’11 collection around his native country and the relaxed attitude at Istanbul’s coffee shops after work hours. But there isn’t anything relaxed about ‘Home Sweet Home’, Benan’s homage collection to Turkish way of life. His presentation, set in Milanese equivalence to the sun blessed Turkish cafés, was focused, spot on and very inspired.
Comfy chocolate brown double-breasted jackets and collarless shirts in deep hues of navy were just a few of the highlights. The salvar baggy trouser is, admittedly, an acquired taste but they fitted of course in with the Turkish theme. Loose and comfortable, but with elements of elegance, Umit Benan have adjusted a national sartorial heritage to the rest of the world. His high-waisted check trousers with drawstring, teamed up with a brown and distressed leather jacket will go down equally well in Paris or London as Istanbul.
