There can be 100 people in a room... but only one of them is in custom Valentino Couture
Following on from last year’s #TimesUp red carpet blackout, it was business as usual at the 2019 Golden Globes last night.
With free reign to go in whatever they wanted, this year’s attendees from both film and TV chose from the likes of Calvin Klein, Rodarte, Dior, Chanel, and more. The usually unlikely choice of Celine (during Phoebe Philo’s era) was a hit for Rachel Weisz and Bohemian Rhapsody’s Lucy Boynton – both favouring Hedi Slimane-designed looks.
Special shoutouts go to the cast of Black Panther, for serving #blackexcellence, and Janelle Monáe who looked like an Egyptian goddess in a look from Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2019 show.
As always, there were those who brought it, and those who didn’t. So, here’s the best (in our opinion anyway) of the night.
OK, so it’s an obvious choice, but Gaga was the night’s MVP wearing a Valentino Couture look designed by Pierpaolo Piccioli. With a train that seemed to stretch on for days, and sleeves for years, Gaga matched her hair with the periwinkle hue of the gown. While looking resplendent, the choice of gown was an homage to Judy Garland in the 1954 version of A Star Is Born. Picking up the award for Best Song with “Shallow”, Gaga is obviously one to watch on this year’s awards circuit. Basically, STEP. YOUR. GAME. UP @everyone else.
EVERYONE FROM POSE
Since FX’s Pose is all about serving face and being that bitch, it was no surprise that the show’s cast came to slay. Indya Moore looked like an intergalatic robot, in a sparkling lattice dress by Louis Vuitton, while MJ Rodriguez served in sea-blue Prabal Gurung. Elsewhere, Janet Mock and Dominique T.A.R Jackson showed how good all-white looks, in Off-White and Marc Bouwer respectively. The #1 spot goes to Billy Porter, who brought it in a bejewelled, embroidered suit with matching cape. Yes, he swished and sashayed down the red carpet just as much as you thought he would.
Is it a bib? Is it a harness? Both? Whatever you want to call it, we can all agree that Timothée Chalamet looked great in an all-black number courtesy of Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton. While the equally sparkly/kinky harness is enough to get your hearts racing, Chalamet wanted to show that he’s also a boy worth bringing home, taking his mother – looking just as glam in Abloh-designed Off-White – as his date. So wholesome!
Despite playing the Antichrist in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, last night Cody Fern appeared as the man of our dreams (or should that be nightmares?) Wearing a black shirt with sheer cut-out, he paired the look with Maison Margiela’s iconic Tabi boots. If that wasn’t enough, Fern’s tousled hair and make-up – kids, that’s how you do a smokey eye – solidified his appearance on this list.
AND… THE FIJI WATER GIRL
The icon we weren’t expecting to appear from the awards, but has already starred in hundreds of memes – it’s the Fiji Water Girl. You might be wondering: “Who?!” While all your fave celebs were posing on the red carpet, FWG – AKA LA-based model Kelleth Cuthbert – was serving face behind them, all while holding a tray of Fiji Water. Sadly, Cuthbert didn’t pick up any awards on the night, but we’re eagerly awaiting her appearance in The Shape of (Fiji) Water. Follow the absolutely not real @therealfijiwatergirl to keep up with her journey.
