Hoogeschool Antwerp’s Fashion Department is famed for its creativity and innovation, and in the past, it paved the way for some of the most steamy names in today’s industry, including Peter Pilotto, Haider Ackermann, Stephan Schneider, Gunhyo Kim, Mikio Sakabe and Bruno Pieters, and of course, the Antwerp 6. The annual show presents the work of all the students from the Academy. First year students show their experiments with a skirt, dress and jacket, while second year students present their inerpretation of historical costumes of their choice. After a break, a small group of master students takes us on a trip around the world with ethnic-inspired costumes, and the big finale includes 4th year students and their 12 silhouettes. Dazed got a hot preview of what to expect from a few of the final year students.

Six Lee, 25, Menswear

Where are you from?
Hong Kong

Why menswear?
Because I want to make menswear look more fun

How would you describe your style?
Playful, innocent but sophisticated at the same time.

What’s your collection's name?
Happiness isn't happiness without a violin-playing goat.

What was the inspiration for your graduate collection?
The orchestra, sounds and superman

Who are your favourite designers and why?
I don't really have a favourite, anything innovative impresses me...

Do you have a muse?
Luc Van Os from Antwerpen.

Tell us any anecdotes of making your graduate collection.
I had so much fun putting the musical instruments into my designs, it was so noisy!!!

What are your plans after graduation?
Stay happy!

Juan Hernandez Daels, 31, Womenswear

Where are you from?
I'm Belgian by nationality, but I was raised in Buenos Aires.

Why womenswear?
Although I've previously only worked with menswear, there always was a vision for womenswear in the back of my head. Now in the fourth year, I felt confident with my tailoring skills and classical garment finishings; to realize  high end creative pieces.

How would you describe your style?
I'm constantly attracted to the perfect fit, whether it be a tailored jacket or a sexy catsuit. Color balance plays an important role in my images as well as geometrical prints. Actually... geometry in general.

What was the inspiration for your graduate collection?
My collection is inspired by the 70’s psychedelic pop image of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, mixed with elements of the movie Blade Runner and it’s art deco image. My collection is divided into organic and geometrical silhouettes, representing the two opposites of replicas and humans from the film.

Who are your favourite designers and why?
This is always a hard question. I cant think of one house that blows me away every single season. I rather judge the overall statement of a designer, whether they sell-out, or stay true to their vision. Right now Im really into Henrik Vibskov. His collections - and the way he manages his brand. I keep coming back to Margiela though.. so i guess I could call his designs my #1.

Do you have a muse?
I don't really have a muse- I like them all.. although Jane Birkin was super hot.

Tell us any anecdotes of making your graduate collection.
This year I wove my own fabrics at the Tilburg Textile Lab.  I have some nice japanese metal thread jackets with psychedelic patterns now - but I had to trade in my bike to pay for it.

What are your plans after graduation?
I would like to find an interesting job, and continue to develop different projects - some I am currently involved in.

Elise Gettliffe, 27, Menswear

Where are you from?
France

Why menswear?
Men are more easy and attractive to dress up

How would you describe your style?
Scratching, not comfortable and not wearable on a daily basis.

What was the inspiration for your graduate collection?
Melting and gluing things

Who are your favourite designers and why?
Many because many are good!

Do you have a muse?
My muse are all the boys I look at everyday.

Tell us any anecdotes of making your graduate collection.
My brain started to melt also.
