Dsquared2 fuse skinheads and glam rockers

Dean and Dan Caten open Milan Fashion Week with a cast of tough guys wearing Bowie-esque platform boots

Last night saw the beginning of Milan Men’s Fashion Week, and with it Dsquared2’s SS17 menswear show. Referencing British subculture and queer culture, their collection drew upon the hyper-masculine and the hyper-gay – a combination that designers Dean and Dan Caten described as “urban tough guy meets glam rocker.”

Skinhead-style stone-washed denim, narrow braces and trilby hats were teamed with sparkly tank tops, sequined blazers and glittery, Bowie-esque platform boots. To add to their ‘bad boy’ attitude, models wore ear, erl and lip piercings and padlock necklaces.

At the end of the show, the designer duo came out to take their bow wearing thigh-high platform boots themselves, and rainbow ribbons around their necks. In the wake of the Orlando shooting last week, many people interpreted this gesture as an expression of solidarity with the 49 people killed and the 53 injured in the attack.

Speaking in an interview with Vogue, the pair said the show was “a celebration of our homosexuality” – and it couldn’t have been better timed.
