Chris Beek was born in Leiderdorp, Holland but grew up in Leiden. Since the age of 13 he has "lived all over Holland," and been based in Amsterdam for the past three years. Beek has walked catwalks for the likes of Prada, Dries Van Noten, Yves Saint Laurent and Raf Simons, and appears in stylist and photographer siblings Hannes and Julia Hetta's collections story, in Dazed's September issue.
Favourite city? Amsterdam. Every time I come home from a trip it feels so good to be back. There is always a very relaxed atmosphere, people are friendly and the whole city just has a good vibe
Dazed Digital: How was shooting with Julia and Hannes for Dazed's September issue?
Chris Beek: I remember that it was an early start and a late finish. But it was a good day, there was a good atmosphere and we laughed a lot that day. Julia and Hannes where really easy to work with and were very clear about what they wanted. One thing I remember really well about that day is that I was watching a documentary about Joy Division in the dressing room. About 15 minutes into the film Hannes came in and said "Huh, what are you doing here? Did you already have lunch?" I said "no." And Hannes said, "Sorry we totally forgot about you but there is still a little bit left." So I got up and walked into the room and there was no food left. I was upset at that moment, but when I think back on it now it makes me laugh. A week after I did two more shoots with Hannes and I have good memories from both of those shoots. They're great people to work with.
DD: What was the last song you listened to?
Chris Beek: Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'. It reminds me of a lot of good times.
DD: Who was the last person you text messaged?
Chris Beek: My girlfriend. I forgot to get my washing out of the washing machine when I was leaving for New York about a week ago. And I asked her if she would be so kind to hang it up for me or throw it away because it was probably rotting away, haha.
DD: Quiet night in or big night out?
Chris Beek: That's a difficult choice… I love big nights out but I can also really enjoy a good movie or a book in bed with a cup of tea. So I would say 50/50.
DD: Favourite city?
Chris Beek: Amsterdam. Every time I come home from a trip it feels so good to be back. There is always a very relaxed atmosphere, people are friendly and the whole city just has a good vibe.
DD: Favourite food?
Chris Beek: I don’t really have favourite food, I eat out a lot because food is a big passion of mine and in the past couple of years I tasted so many great dishes that I could not really point out a favourite one. I can say that one of the best dishes I ever had was a spicy scallop tartar.
DD: What makes you laugh?
Chris Beek: A lot of things.
DD: What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Chris Beek: You should never dwell on the past too much because it stops you from dealing with the present, where life actually is.
DD: What's your hidden talent?
Chris Beek: My girlfriend has her own jewellery brand, Cristel Ball, and we started working together a while back to create more unusual designs. It worked really well and right now we are trying to set up a web shop so we can reach out to more people.
DD: What do you wear on a day off?
Chris Beek: I have a lot of days off, haha. But on a lazy Sunday, I will wear a tracksuit and wool socks, or when I have my caveman mood I won’t wear anything.
