On|Off, the UK’s independent fashion showcase working to bridge the gap between on and off schedule designers, has come together again with photographer Rankin, and his creative director wife Tuuli, to help unearth a new generation of fresh fashion talent.

But while last year saw designers and photographers work alongside, this season the focus has shifted to the burgeoning industry of fashion film. With five talented filmmakers chosen by Rankin, and an equal number of designers selected by On|Off, the final product of each collaboration is set to open London Fashion Week, with a special preview in Paris. Dazed were lucky enough to be given a special preview of Konstantinos Menelaou's film featuring the designs of eclectic Chinese designer Yang Du, and asked her to tell us a bit more about the project…

Dazed Digital: Can you explain the concept for the video?
Yang Du: It is very difficult to explain because it’s almost abstract. Our references when we were designing the story included Noah's Ark, and the recent ferry disaster in Italy. We are hoping to use this piece to somehow reflect who we are today in terms of our relationships with one another.

DD: Tell us about being partnered with director Konstantinos Menelaou…
Yang Du: I have been laughing about it saying it’s really been like an arranged marriage. At the end of the day it’s really about how we could make this work for both of us, how we see each other’s work, and hopefully make something interesting together.

DD: What was the filming process like? What role did you play?
Yang Du: It was intense before the shooting as we only had a very short time for preparation. We eventually got sponsorship from St James Hotel and Club Mayfair. Everybody who came to work on the film brought a big suitcase, we checked in, and it was just like having a day off from our normal job really, it was great. I was the designer and stylist looking after the boys and setting up the props.

DD: Do you prefer seeing your work in stills or on film?
Yang Du: I like to see my work in any kind of media, whether it’s flat drawings, photos or moving images. Part of the joy of working with different artists is it’s really exciting to see their visions. Sometime it can take us to a completely different direction, a new adventure really.

DD: What are you looking forward to the most working with OnlOff?
Yang Du: I am looking forward to my presentation in Paris on the 1st March, which has been made possible by OnlOff in partnership with Land Rover. I worked with OnlOff Presents back in 2009 when I first established my label during LFW. It’s such a pleasure to be able to work with the amazing OnlOff team again. And I have been very lucky to have the lovely performing artist Ryan Style and his friends Roy Kerr, H Plewis and Steve Nice on board for the show in Paris.
