Saturday at Flatpack Festival was all about animation
Saturday at Flatpack Festival was all about animation. Animation and probably the most sinister film I have ever seen but more about that later.
The Darklight animated shorts were great, pretty much all of them the first was the very clean looking Divers by Paris Mavroidis where we have a kaleidoscope of synchronised sky divers twisting through the sky as they pull in and out of geometric shapes.
Also in that series was the more traditional and quite hilarious animation Chicks collaboration between Aaron Hughes and stock frame animator Ana Husman and a play on the age old story of man, woman and the inevitable rest of the story.
Then, back to the Electric Cinema for the puppetry animation series and a favourite, ‘Dockpojken’ or ‘Puppetboy’. Having only seen the bizarre fake documentary, in which animator turns puppet with hilarious consequences, this was a great chance to see the original adventures of Johannes Nyholms, who also made the video for The Knife’s cover of Jose Gonzales’ ‘Heartbeats’, bizarre and endearing creation.
The last film of the day was the Greek film Dogtooth and having been awarded ‘un certain regard’ at Cannes seemed foolish to miss. This was probably one of the best films I have ever seen. Suffice to say there was silence as the lights went up as the credits rolled for this dark, dark comedy about three adult siblings who are kept as children by their parents.
Go and see it, it will disturb you beyond all measure.
