For all the designers and illustrators out there in Dazed world, keep an eye out for New Ornamental Type (published by Thames & Hudson), and also For Love & Money (published by Laurence King). The former compiles 360 illustrations of genre specific decorative lettering, moving from the origins of ornamental type to how the form is changing with the digital age. And, while genres like “hip hop” tend to fall into bubble graffiti clichés, it contains some letterforms that should inspire. However, for me, For Love & Money is the more captivating of the two, as it features more than 80 contemporary illustrators who are pushing the boundaries of modern graphic design. And it includes a fair few Dazed alumni like Ben UFO and the illustration he did for Dazed’s LSD feature back in 2008, so I guess I’m a little biased! Favoritism aside, for £20 this is an essential purchase for graphic designers and art directors everywhere.
