Mimi Wade: the beauty products that defined my life

TextAlex Peters

From Davidoff Cool Water to glitter mascara, designer Mimi Wade describes the beauty products that have impacted her life

Beauty Biographies is a weekly column where we ask some of our favourite people to reflect on the beauty items that have influenced their lives and have a sentimental place in their heart. From their grandmother’s perfume to the eyeshadow they wore to their first dance, these are the products that have had a significant impact on them and that instantly transport them back to a particular time, place, or person.

Bringing fun and glamour back into fashion, Mimi Wade’s tongue-in-cheek humour always comes through in her designs. Heavily inspired by Old Hollywood screen sirens, Mimi’s constant muse is her grandmother “Granny Pammy,” aka former actress Pamela Curran. “She was a glamour girl,” Mimi told Dazed, “a naughty debutante back in the 50s and 60s. She doesn’t really give a shit.” This attitude of defiance is blended with a decadent and bold femininity, a predilection for print (think cherries and old B-movie ephemera) and slogans which are alternately flirty and aggressive (“suggested for mature audiences” one bodice winks while “WITCH: We Intend to Create Havoc” is emblazed across another) to create clothes that are Mimi’s own brand of female empowerment. As such they have been worn by everyone from Pamela Anderson to Lana del Rey. Here Mimi talks the beauty products that defined her early years.

Nuxe Oil

Bronzer, scent, body and hair glitter and moisturiser all in one, it is the essence of the summer holidays of my youth.

Davidoff Cool Water

I remember the cool older girls at school in their Miss Sixty jeans, Ralph Lauren jumpers that were a bit too small and Tiffany necklaces dousing themselves in it in a poor attempt to disguise the smell of cigarettes. I was in awe.

Pearlescent White Nail Polish

I remember getting this in my stocking along with an assortment of other ‘winter’ themed mini polishes (one with holographic love hearts inside). I just bought an Essie white shimmery nail polish yesterday and I felt like it was the ‘grown-up’ version of what I’d wear as a child.

Kérastase Serum

I remember being completely forbidden to use it as a kid and mum saying how it was super expensive and savouring every precious drop. That was until my sister’s godfather Tony Crosbie suggested we use it for our Barbie’s hair who we’d taken into the sea with us and it actually worked a treat – much to my mum’s absolute horror.

Stargazer Semi Permanent Hair Dye

When I was 10 years old and didn’t have access to bleach I used this magenta hair dye on my mouse-brown hair, achieving a rather undesirable sludge pink that was not at all what I was sold by the vivid swatch of synthetic hair advertising the colour at the hippy shop in Cirencester where I bought it.

Glitter Mascara

Essentially a clear gel with little flecks of glitter that were just subtle enough to get away with at school, mainly because it didn’t really work. That didn’t matter though – somehow the motion of applying mascara made me feel very womanly and sophisticated and that was enough.
