Vlatka Popović recreates miniature masterpieces on her own eyelid

Vlatka Popović on the smell of Christmas, dragons, Salvador Dali and the ever-inspiring art of make-up

The Dazed Beauty Community is our ever-expanding encyclopaedia of creatives and emerging talent from across the world who are redefining the way we think about beauty. From supermodels to digital artists to makeup prodigies transforming themselves in their bedrooms, these are the beauty influencers of tomorrow who embody everything Dazed Beauty is about. Discover them here.

Vlatka Popović is inspired by art – both older and more modern art although periods of realism and surrealism are her favourites – and her passion has manifested itself in quite a literal sense. On her Instagram, you will find tiny recreations of some of the most iconic and famous paintings in the world. A minute Mona Lisa sits happily next to the surreal Elephants by Salvador Dali, while Magritte's The Lovers looks over Botticelli’s Venus.

A make-up artist, Popović executes these mini masterpieces on her own eyelid. “I am a make-up artist, something I always wanted to be. But I didn’t want to do classic make-up, I wanted to express something I love, something different and unusual, to bring art into life again,” the Bosnia-based artist says.

Wanting to be like her artist father, combined with a childhood spent drawing portraits and nature, and playing with her mother's make-up, has led Popović to where she is today. “I worked hard to get myself everything I needed for my dreams to come true,” Popović says.

What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It's about knowing and accepting who you are.

What are you working on at the moment?
Right now, I'm discovering more art and thinking about what to draw next on my eyelid.

Tomorrow you wake up with another face of your choice. Whose is it and why?
I'm happy with this one, but if I must choose, then I would wake up as Salvador Dali, and then go back to sleep and use the power of dream for inspiration.

You’ve had an accident which causes you to lose your sense of smell. The doctors can’t return it fully but can give you the ability to smell one scent. What do you pick and why?
The smell of Christmas. Christmas has its own smell in Bosnia: the cold air and snow mixed with all the food that we make during the holiday.

You have to replace your body with that of an animal or a mythological creature. What do you go for and why?
A dragon. I’ve always wanted to fly, plus I could spit fire. They are such powerful creatures.

If you could have a new sense on top of your existing ones, what would it be?
Hard question, I don't think that much about the future, but I'd like to be healthy and happy, that's the most important.
