With an established culture of film-making in action sports, it’s rare that one film can enter the fray that breaks the mould and spans genres. However, inspired by the spirit of Renaissance painter, sculptor and architect Giorgio Vasari, whose biographies spanned different art disciplines, Relentless Energy Drinks have attempted to do just that. The result of their endeavor is 'Lives of the Artists', a new feature-length documentary that explores the personalities of various contemporary artists, musicians and sports obsessives as they pursue their passions and push themselves to the absolute limit.

Here, the French snowboarder Xavier De Le Rue, one of the world’s most successful snowboarders and the World Freeride Champion for the last two years, shares his true passion – backcountry boarding. Despite a recent near death experience involving an avalanche, Xavier ventures back into remote, dangerous and often untouched parts of Greenland, where he conquers the truly unthinkable. Moving from land to sea, the film also documents big wave surfers Tom Lowe and Fergal Smith, who battle the massive surf of the South Pacific. On the southern tip of Tahiti – in a place known by locals as ‘Teahupoo’ which translates to ‘The Wall Of Skulls’ – these adrenalin junkies take surfing to the extreme, and endure stomach-churning injuries in a wild circus of chaos. Unsurprisingly, the boys walk away with rare respect of the local surfers. The film also follows UK hardcore punk band Gallows as they tour the USA on the Warped Tour. On a tortuous trek from city to city, playing in a tour where 90 per cent of the crowd represent the most commercial aspects of the music industry, the band stand out like a very sore and angry thumb, delivering intense performances to audiences unprepared for their visceral onslaught.

Shaped by the sharp contrasts between worlds, the film demonstrates the common characteristics of all the personalities involved – the vision, ambition, struggle, sacrifice, obsession and triumph. Irrespective of their chosen paths, be it mountain, ocean or amphitheatre, the film shows that artists of all kinds are united by one thing their uncompromising drive to create art.
