Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina of Pussy Riot: set for Netflix fame?

How's this for a political guest star? Pussy Riot members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina have filmed a cameo for House of Cards, the Emmy-winning Netflix show that stars Kevin Spacey as a murderously ambitious US politician.

According to Baltimore's City Paper, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were spotted on the local set of the show last week. Two sources on the production team confirmed that the duo will appear in the third season of the acclaimed show.

The cameo isn't as unexpected as you think – the pair met with House of Cards staff back in May. At the time, they told the Wall Street Journal that their "main agenda" was wanting to "learn how to do a political movie".

Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina were convicted in 2012 for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" during their protest performance of an anti-Putin song in a Moscow church. They were sentenced to two years in prison and were released early from prison in December 2013.

Despite being subjected to appalling conditions in detention, the pair continued to protest after their release – most notably against the Winter Olympics, where they were attacked and arrested for performing another protest song in Sochi.

Netflix keeps a tight lid on casting rumours and has not yet comented on the news, but City Paper states that Pussy Riot's first fictional television debut will involve a musical performance. Hopefully, Frank Underwood won't try to push them under a train.
