An American social network envisioned as "Facebook for patriots" has been shut down after being overrun by trolls who flooded the site with phony accounts, fake groups and pornographic GIFs.

ReaganBook was set up by Janet Porter, an Ohio Republican and founder of the pro-life group Faith2Action. After reading about Facebook employees taking part in an LGBT rights demonstration in San Francisco, Porter was so incensed that she set up her own alternative – for real patriots only!!!! – to the social network.

Unfortunately, the internet wasn't too happy about that. When the site launched on Tuesday, it attracted users including Ben Ghazi, Zombie Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and somebody who went by the name SATAN! SATAN! SATAN!. Users also created group pages such as Cut Dicks for Christ, which simply announced, "Calling all cut dicks."

Shortly afterwards, the site was flooded with porn GIFS, gay porn and gay fanfiction featuring prominent conservative politicians.

A frantic admin post by Porter apologising for the "vile content" did not go unnoticed; a user named Lord God commented: "JANET MY DAUGHTER, YOUR PRAYERS ARE GOING STRAIGHT INTO MY SPAM FILTER. PLEASE TEXT ME FOR QUICKER RESPONSE."

Less than 24 hours after its launch, site administrators took the social network down and posted this message: "Please be patient while we make the necessary changes to keep the site free from obscenity, pornography, and those intent on the destruction of life, liberty, and the family."

Maybe next time, conservatives should just stick to Bebo.
