Basically, the owner of the world’s most capable communications satellite just went bankrupt and the Buy This Satellite project, launched by the Ahumanright organisation, are fundraising to buy it. Once bought, they will move the satellite to connect millions of people in all areas of the world who need the communications link, who will then turn access into opportunity. Over 1000 people have donated thus far, celebrating the notions that the internet that transformed what it means o be human, and a universal tool that allows people to help themselves. It’s a vision of an even further connected world. Jay Cousins, the Berlin representative of Buy This Satellite will present their brilliantly radical and ambitious plans at Dazed Live. Dazed Digital: In the broadest sense, what inspires you about working with DIY and Digital ethos’ of today?Jay Cousins: The sense of social empowerment. The world is our toolbox, all that is required is our capability to envision a better future. DD: Where did this huge idea spawn from?Jay Cousins: Ahumanright.org was born at Palomar5, a camp which brought together 30 people under 30 to explore the future of work. DD: With your work, what would you say are some hidden or unusual inspirations?Jay Cousins: I like to work with “waste” (or “surplus” as I prefer to call it). I'm inspired by those around me who work for love, from nothing, and push the boundaries of what is possible. DD: What music acts are you looking forward to seeing?Jay Cousins: It’s got to be Aidan Moffat, although the About Group sound interesting and I look forward to all the other heavy basslines. DD: What's the next steps with Buy This Satellite?Jay Cousins: We're still working to meet our $150,000 goal and working with several satellite owners who would like to donate bandwidth from their satellites to our cause. Buy This Satellite is appearing at Dazed Live on Saturday April 9, 2011. The festival takes place at several occasions in and around Shoreditch and is presented in parthership with Levi's and Absolut Vodka.
