This month, as Dazed releases the Another Dimension 3D issue, the progressive Echo Park-based hip hop producer Bobby Evans sees his robotic electro smash Freak-A-Zoid Robots twisted through a retro 80’s time warp with a 3D video. Directed by Marcus Herring (who recently worked with Roman Coppola on an intimate Sebastien Tellier film) as part of the Delicious Vinyl family, it’s Weird Science meets an Electroma neon escapade. Bobby Evans is also still working on new material with the creative mic talents of Jams F Kennedy, as LA low end rap duo Brother Reade (you must check 2007’s Rap Music, one of the best hip hop debut albums of recent years) as well as flexing his art and design skills with OBEY. Check out the Dazed UK exclusive of the Freak-A-Zoid Robots 3D below.Dazed Digital: Can you introduce director Marcus Herring?Bobby Evans: Marcus works with the LA-based production company called The Directors Bureau. Some really heavy names represent for the company like Spike Jones, Roman Coppolla, Mike Mills, and Patrick Daughters It’s easy to see him graduating to the top. DD: What’s with the new label?Bobby Evans: It's an LA based artist collective called Bad Beat. It was born from the need of artists to release music quickly without having to rely on traditional record labels, ya know like the white label records we all used to buy. DD: The new material is a dope direction for Brother Reade.Bobby Evans: The new songs definitely feel like we've been developing the ideas from Rap Music. Basslines, which have always been important to Brother Reade have become even more defined and showcased. The drum sounds have also gotten larger but the tracks are still spacious. I've been really focusing on the quality of minimal sounds instead of massive layering. Minimal bass heavy production that knocks, I guess it ain't a coincidence that we grew up in the South. Jams is on a seriously creative path, I really don't believe that there are any MCs out there like him.DD: So what about LA’s love for dubstep?Bobby Evans: Yeah, they're wild for it out here, it's crazy to see it all happen. When we were in London a few years ago our friends turned us on to all of those jams ‘cause we were mad for it, sitting on the floor and ripping all their CDs. We came back to LA full of new music and started playing it out. People were not feeling it at all. I remember sound checking at this rap ass rap show with Jah Hova and when the bass dropped everyone started booing. Also, Mr. Grustle and Tha Russian have put together the Dubstep LA mixtape featuring killer MCs paired with dubstep producers and mixed by Plastician. You can check out Jams on Play Doe with Joker and Rustie. DD: Can you talk about the upcoming Delicious Vinyl mixtape?Bobby Evans: It's gonna be pretty heavy, I was just going through beats for it last night. I really want to showcase all the amazing producers I've been listening to lately, It'll be mainly instrumental with a couple killer MC guest spots. I brought up the idea to Rick Ross at Delicious Vinyl and he was instantly into it. It's a touch early to share the track list but it's basically featuring my favorite beat makers and MCs out right now. DD: Love the new collage art - and there’s more for OBEY?Bobby Evans: Yes. We started doing a weekly called Moon Dogg and I would always make collages for the flyers. Someone from OBEY really dug them and hit me up about doing a few designs. I did a set and sent them over but I guess the girls I cut up weren't wearing enough clothes. I'm currently working on a new set with partially clothed women.
