Books, music, food, interiors and clothes, of course, share the marvelous six storey tall building in Mayfair. The latest contribution to DSM’s offerings – and the subject of a new window display – is a collection of Baccarat chandeliers. Introducing their new Bouchons de Carafe collection, Baccarat showcases three classic styles: Zenith black Starck, Solstice and Helios. The DSM window display has been created by Comme des Garçons head designer Rei Kawakubo, using chandeliers designed by Elie Top who was inspired by “stoppers” from a Baccarat exhibit of crystal brandy decanters and perfume bottles, all created between 1910 and 1920. Elie Top, educated at the famous Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, has previously worked with Yves Saint Laurent and designed jewelery for Alber Elbaz at Lanvin. “Each piece in his collection for Baccarat “the Bouchons de Carafe” has been hand-cut at Baccarat’s factory using time-honoured techniques. The hand of the craftsman cannot tremble, for to do so would mean he would have to start all over again. This is the epitomy of Couture Extravagance”. Escape the algorithm!
