Visionaire 56 Solar is the first publication to use patented, formulated inks that have the ability to transform black and white images into brilliant colour. What seemingly looks like a series of black and white images will become more complex or suddenly appear as a four colour image when exposed to sunlight or UV rays.Mario Sorrenti, Yoko Ono, David Sims, Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, and Glen Luchford are some of the participants in this project. The signature image as seen above featurs a model in S/S 09 Calvin Keling dress photographed by Richard Burbridge. When viewed in sunlight, a colour blind test with the number 56 is projected onto the model. The cover image will also be the first of its kind as it features a white embroidered bird in flight, based on an image by artist Roe Ethridge. Once again, under UV rays, the bird will appear in a multitude of colours. Cecilia Dean, co-founder and editor of Visionaire sees this innovation in ink techniques as a perfect marriage to what Francisco Costa does at Calvin Klein with his experimentments with geometric cuts and fabrics: "We developed the inks to work in print, but we originally saw these inks used in thread and fabric. We immediately imagined clothing transforming from white to color. Calvin Klein Collection was a natural fit because of Francisco’s minmalist aesthetics and geometric influences and Italo’s experimentations with new techniques. What they accomplish with clothes, we do in print.”Visionaire 56 SOLAR available at the Calvin Klein Collection store on New York’s Madison Avenue, as well as in key specialty stores around the world at a suggested retail price of $250.
