The legendary graffiti, signage and Coney Island Cyclone artist started climbing rooftops and painting ESPO back in 1984 and returned to Philly 25 years later to stage a love letter across the same rooftops facing the Market-Frankford line. Working with the Mural Arts Program, the book’s introduction states: “The letter, meant for one, with meaning for all, encompasses 50 walls on a 20 block stretch of market street. Drawing input, inspiration, and work from the community, Powers created a letter to and from west Philly. It required 1200 cans of spray paint, 800 gallons of bucket paint, and the skilled hands of 20 of the finest spray painters in America, who Powers put into the legendary ICY club.” The love letters, 100 full-colour Brick Valentines On The Philly Skyline have been collated in book form (available now, Free News Projects, right?) however Powers, ever the community leader recently organised a Love Letter art show, an ESPO Retrospective, a Love Train Tour (leaving from Love Park) and better yet, Espo’s Love Letter Tattoo Shop to coincide with this release.
