Mirai Tomono at The Dazed Gallery

The Japanese photographer creates a unique place to chill in the heart of East London

"I really think you should sit down calmly, take a stress pill and think things over..."
 HAL – 2001 A Space Odyssey

Sure, HAL might be a psychotic killer computer but it's pretty sound advice in the rushing modern world, and if you haven't got any Xanax lying around at home then a trip to The Dazed Gallery might be your perfect prescription for the next few weeks. Mirai Tomono's exhibition A Place to Chill opens this month and his first solo show in the UK provides the big smoke's urbanites with some much needed space for quiet reflection and calm. These unpretentious and serene photos of Japan evoke a kind of transcendence in the viewer, in fact they put me in mind of the song "Little Star of Bethlehem" by 60s experimentalists Can – the stoner mantra "Do you want... water lillies in your bathtub... water lillies in your bathtub... water lillies..." just keeps going round and round inside my head when I stare into their strange vistas. If travelling about on the London Underground is driving you to the point where you feel like you might want to get to know the front of a train a bit more personally, get yourself down here fast, stand in front of one of the photos, breathe in deeply and, well, chill... it might just save your life.

A Place to Chill is at The Dazed Gallery May 16 - June 6
Private View May 17, 7-9pm sponsored by Tiger Beer
